Friday News Round-up

Fosters is reporting that the 2010 Laconia World Championship Sled Dog Derby has been cancelled due to conditions.

Lyman said the decision was based on safety considerations for the mushers and dogs and the fact that he and other LRSDC club volunteers could not construct a workable course for the derby. The sled dog derby, however, will be back for the second weekend in February 2011, he added.

Some Sled Dog races in New England have been held.  From the Concord Monitor:

Christopher Carter of Penacook finished in ninth place in the Adult Unlimited Speed Class in the Burke Mountain Sled Dog Dash at East Burke Mountain in Vermont. Carter finished the 20-mile course in 1 hour, 24 minutes, 3 seconds.

And the Union Leader reports that Manchester has a “temporary” dog park.

Aldermen voted to create a “temporary” dog park on a tiny piece of city-owned land on Bass Island.

Board members have said the parcel may be so small that only little dogs would be allowed to romp on it. Aldermen said they would continue to hunt for a permanent location.
